Improve battery life on a Samsung Blackjack or Cingular 8525

If you want to improve the battery life on your Samsung Blackjack smartphone or Cingular 8525 (or other HTC devices), you can simply change your data connection to use GPRS instead of the default HSDPA. To make the change, do the following:

For a Samsung Blackjack

  1. Enter *#1546792*#
  2. Select option 3 "Network & Call Settings"
  3. Select option 5 "Network Mode"
  4. Select GSM

For the Cingular 8525, and other HTC devices, you have to download a utility called Hermes Tweaker. More information and further instructions can be found on this newsgroup posting.

Several Lanlogic employees have implemented this, and we are all very happy with the results. Big thanks to Vik Thairani for the tips.

This, along with removing GoodLink from my phone, has allowed me to use my 8525 for 2-3 days without a charge.  Fantastic piece of freeware!

Another battery saver for the BlackJack is to disable the email PUSH option. If someone out there can post up the instructions on how to do this it would be most appreciated as I do not remember how it goes. Thanks

As alternative to entering the code above to switch your band to GSM, you could try adding a shortcut to Bandsel.exe

Instructions here:

www.i607.org/.../doku.php

This allows to switch between Auto, GSM850, and GSM1900 where Auto is G3 if available. I generally use GSM1900 (G), rather than GSM850 (E). The battery life is pretty much the same for these two.

I tested this camera for a client. I didn’t have the light running for more than 15 minutes. The battery lasted approximately 6 hours before recharging. The LCD, however, had a few dead pixels - never saw this before. Tried returning for exchange and had to put up quite a fight. Anyone else seen this? www.batterylaptoppower.com

I have had a BJ for 8 months now and at first was very frustrated by this battery life issue. When reading the owners manual, I realized the problem was not the phone at all, but the OS.

Windows Mobile does not close any application when you navigate away. For instance, if you make a call starting from Contacts, the Contacts app will remain "running" until you go into the Task Manager and stop it by holding the HOME key. It does not automatically close once the call is made or ended. All the apps I was running wore out the battery in no time. Notepad, messaging, IE, etc.

Since this discovery, I haven't had to use my extended battery at all and charge my phone once a week. BTW, this is my primary phone, I have no home phone.
