HyperTerminal for Vista

I learned the hard way today that Microsoft has removed HyperTerminal from Windows Vista, when I needed to connect to a Cisco router through a local COM port. The good news is that you can still get HyperTerminal from Hilgraeve, the company that Microsoft licensed the application through.

You could also look at Ponderosa, which is a nice open-source terminal application that does SSH, Telnet and COM connections. The other big feature that Ponderosa offers is a tabbed interface, which is especially nice when dealing with multiple connections. Their tabs work somewhat differently than you might be used to with Firefox or IE7, because the tabs can be placed next to one another allowing you to view both connections at the same time.

Be careful with HyperTerminal. Personal use is very much that. If you are using their product for 'Work', then you might want to go with a Open Source/Freeware solution.

My personal choice of terminal emulation is Absolute Telnet. I began using it when I first went to a system sans serial port. Absolute Telnet handled the odd port number assigned to my USB-to-Serial adapter without issue via it's "Direct to COM" connections.

It also includes a telnet client (as you would expect), an SSL client (v1 and v2), a direct dialer that I will most likely never use.

With editing features that allow me to capture all of screen content that I fly through, it is a very cool tool for the way I work.

If you want (or just because you get used to it) you can still use old XP Hyper terminal. Just extract two files hypertrm.dll and hypertrm.exe. You can put them anywhere on the disk, no installation required. Of course, for that you need to have XP to extract files from.

Maybe I'm just dense, but how exactly does poderosa connect to a com port I don't see that option. I see Telnet, SSH, and connect to Cygwin.

i second the putty vote. i already have putty as a standard application for SSH on my vista (well actually for ALL) machines. i'm using a USB to SERIAL adapter for my notebook to program up some cisco routers now and it works flawlessly. cheers, Wiz!!

Poderosa requires the 'serial port connection' plugin to use the com ports. There is a new version of Hyperterminal available at Hilgraeve. It's free for personal use or about $40 for business purposes. Hilgraeve is who actually wrote Hyperterminal. They sell a professional version for about $150. SecureCRT costs about $100, I've heard it's good.

Putty works great on VISTA. I had been using Reflections. It was full of lag time and basically useless. PUTTY was the answer to my prayers. Now, if only Outlook 2007 and the Microsoft suite worked properly I would almost be happy.

Another vote for puTTY (didn't realize COM support had been added)... I'm using Vista with USB-to-serial from IOGear to connect to a Cisco pix. It works great!

The new version of Putty with serial support is awesome! i wish they would have implemented this much sooner. There is no need for any other command line program other than Putty now.

Thanks for all the feedback on this issue! I've switched back to PuTTY myself, having been a big fan of it for a long time now. I had no idea that a new version had come out, and am really happy to see that serial support is in there.

I like Putty as well; have used it for Telnet for ages. I've tried the serial capabilities; but it doesn't seem to support file transfers (X-modem, Y-modem, etc). Is it not there; or am I just overlooking it somewhere?

In terms of Hyperterminal replacements, I really like TeraTerm. The best part is that it is scriptable. The language isn't that great (I much prefer AutoIt v3) but it's better than nothing, which is what you normally get.

I use Absolute Telnet for my regular ssh client on my workstations, but keep PuTTY on my flash drive to make sure I have an ssh client on the run.  They're both great programs.  I don't generally need all the configuration options that Absolute gives you, but it's nice to know they're there if you need them.
