iTunes update broke Outlook 2003

We had a customer call in today because Outlook 2003 on this Vista computer suddenly wouldn't open.  It gave the generic "failed to start" error.  After some standard troubleshooting, we discovered the latest iTunes update included an Outlook add-in to allow Outlook to sync with the iPhone.   To get Outlook working again, we simply had to disable the add-in, which can be found under "COM Add-ins", not the Add-in Manager.

I'm not sure if this is or will be a common issue, but it's something to look at if Outlook suddenly has a problem and iTunes was recently updated.

You can verify whether an add-in is causing the issue (either the iTunes one, or some other one) by seeing if you can open Outlook in Safe Mode.  If Safe Mode works and regular mode doesn't, you can be pretty sure that it's an add-in problem.  If it won't open in Safe Mode either... well, then it's probably something else...

Amy --you're right on.  I just wasted an hour w/ my service provider (Cablevision/Optimum) as to why I could suddenly only SEND email via Outlook 2003 RECEIVE nothing on my new Dell XPS 420 w/ Vista..  They punted to MS first, Dell second.  They never asked about what I had done differently this day -- downloaded a new version of iTunes -- and I did not think to volunteer it.  At wits end, I Googled for a possible connection and found your post, and VOILA!  FIXED.  THANKS SO MUCH!

Thanks for this idea.  I did as you said with the COM add-in and now Outlook opens fine.

I still have a problem with opening Itunes. Everytime I try to open Itunes after updateing to vs 8.0.1, the windows installer comes up, tells me to restart PC and nevers opens Itunes.  This happens everytime. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Itunes and Quicktime several times...doing a clean disk, etc. inbetween the installs.

Any ideas...Apple is no help at all.
