Motorola Q - Hard Reset

So the Motorola Q is the hot new thing this week, and probably for some time to come!

How to do a hard reset (which will erase everything) on a Motorola Q

Select Start | System Tools | Master Reset

---------------------------------------------------------------

6/28/06 - Updated

A couple of people have emailed me because they can't get into the Start menu on their phone to do the hard reset.  I spoke to Motorola technical support, and got an email from someone who has been working with pre-production Qs for 6 months, who both told me there is currently no other way to do a reset on the device, other than what I have posted above.  But it's definitely a "feature" that I hope will be incorporated into any future versions of the phone.

If you are having problems with your Q already (since they were just released a few weeks ago), don't be afraid to exchange it for a new one.

The Motorola Q tech support line that I called was 1-800-657-7576.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

3/1/07 - Update

A reader reports that a Master Reset can be done on the Motorola Q by pressing and holding the center navigation button and the red power button simulaneously at power up.  I don't have a Q here to test with, so give it a try and let me know if it works.

Thanks to redace for the tip!

You can also get to a "Master Reset" menu by pressing and holding the center navigation button and red power button simultaneously at power up, no need to boot all the way into the windows OS.

Hi Amy,

One of my clients has a Q phone that had been locked by the previous user.  So I could not get to the start menu.  I tried the two-button approach (center nav button plus the red power button).  It works like a dream.

Thanks!!

It works in the beginning but it gets harder every time after 3-4 times You have to do master reset again. There is precise timing to do it - somehow You go to safe mode for Your PC - sometimes it takes long and frustrating to get.

Great to find this info when I needed it. Most devices have a power on reset. It is just a matter of knowing what button to press at power up. :-)

With power off, simultaneously hold down the middle button and the red power button will bring up the "Verizon Wireless" logo.  Continue to hold both buttons down for about another 5 seconds or so and question "Master Reset?" will appear.  Then press either "yes" or "no".  This worked on my Verizon Q9m even when it would not boot past the originally logo.  Even before the opening animation.

Ok, got it to work after a frustrating number of attempts that yielded no results. Make sure you have the thing plugged in with its factory charger. Don't know if this makes a difference, but I had been trying to master reset while plugged into a travel charger.

Anyway, it kills all your data, as noted above, but it's a last resort. This phone really sucks.

Heres the proper instructions:

when you turn the phone one you will see the logo of the provider, this is when you press the middle silver key and the red button, then let go after you press it and press it again...usually takes 2 presses but keep trying untill the master rest screen comes up

yep - worked.

I really hate my Q - while it displays web much better than my last bb it is a battery hog and I can never make it through a day without my stupid phone going dead on me.

I know there is the extended battery but that kind of defeats the purpose, I would have kept my brickberry (nextel with ptt) if I wanted a 5 pound phone.

My Q rant for the day.

The Motorola Q is the worst phone I have ever used. I had to replace my Silver one since it wasn't charging properly, it would hang up for no reason, it would freeze up and more. Verizon finally replaced it with the latest Black version and I have had it for about a month. Today I went to use it and it was frozen. I could not place or receive calls, couldn't access anything. Finally I tried the hard reset (hold down the red and center button during boot up) and it worked! It will delete all your contacts and you will need to re-synch, but the phone is working. Thanks very much for the tip!

Yes, the Q truly is the worst "phone" ever created.  Our company replaced all the executive's BlackBerries with Q's, and wow, what a horrible move.  I went through THREE of these devices within 5 months, and each one was plagued by the same awful problems.  Wouldn't sync with emails, wouldn't charge, wouldn't turn on, etc..  I had to remove the battery on my Q 5-6 times a week during the last 3 weeks I had one.

Finally convinced the corporate office to get me a Blackjack and have no problems at all.  I'm extremely tech savvy, so these were not user-related problems, rather the Q is really just that bad.  3 other executives in my office have had to get theirs replaced, and all of them chose other phones such as the Blackjack and Dash, and they couldn't be happier.

It is truly mindblowing how bad of a device this is.  I mean, really, truly, amazing how this could pass QA testing.  97 thumbs down to Motorola on this one.

Oh, and the hard reset wouldn't work.  Just keeps flashing the ROM BOOT_LOADER screen.  I'm boxing it up to send back right after I send this comment!

Actually, I found another way to do it.  Press and hold the "E" and "Z" keys while powering on until you get a small notice at the tole of the screen.  It sat on the master reset screen for about 4 minutes then it rebooted and has been working fine.

Hi. My name is Daniel and I'm a Q user. I, too, had issues with the Motorola Q (Verizon, the silver one, first edition, etc). The thing locked up at the Windows Mobile Screen. I found this blog and kept trying (like y'all said). I had many of the problems that other people had on here while trying to reset it (e.g., shutting off, nothing happening, etc). So, here's what I did:

1. Held down the center silver navigation button.

2. While holding the nav button down, I pressed the red power button.

3. At the Verizon Wireless logo (not the flash animation), I let go of the RED POWER BUTTON ONLY.

4. Then, I pressed the center nav button and red power button continuously (with about a FULL SECOND between pushes) until the flash animation came up. Then I let go of the RED POWER BUTTON ........BUT STILL KEP HOLDING THE CENTER NAV BUTTON!

5. As the Window Mobile Screen came up, the screen started to load and then I LET GO OF THE CENTER NAV BUTTON, waited about 30 seconds while it did its thing.

6. Then it came off and I immediately went to START, TOOLS, SYSTEM RESET, then it reset and now here I am. Happy.

Now, like some other guy said, I'm selling this thing on ebay right now!

I held down the E and Z key and then powered the phone on.  It reset the phone without any prompt back to the initial OS loading screen.  After about 3 minutes it finished the reload of the OS and came back to the original startup screen as a fresh device.

I too was having problems getting the master reset to work on my verizon Q 9m.  I was successful once before with the master reset (navigation button and power button) but couldn't get it to work this time despite trying all different combinations and suggestions by the user comments posted above.

On another site I found a suggestion to hold center silver navigation button for five seconds and THEN while still holding the nav button press and hold the red power button.  This way worked the first time I tried.

Most of you have probably tried this, but make sure your Q is fully charged via the AC cord. I tried to charge mine via USB and the thing wouldn't boot completely. Somehow the battery was actually drained while connected to the USB cord even though it had been displaying the charging battery animation.

please wait

All I need to dop now is find a charger!

My Q was frozen.  I took out the battery, put it back in, and restarted the Q only to see the Sprint screen sit there forever.  While the hard reset does indeed "fix" the problem, be aware that it totally deletes/removes all of your data./contacts/favorites/programs that you previously had.  I unfortunately _had_ to do this reset, but it would have been nice to do a soft reset instead.
